THE DANCE EVENINGS AT THE ARISTOCRATIC MANSION "CASINO" OF DIMITRIOS FOSKARDIS IN GALARO, ZAKYNTHOS.
During the carnival period in old Zakynthos, until the late 19th century, from the Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee, the beginning of Triodion, until midnight on Tyro Sunday, special dance evenings were held at the famous "Casino" mansion, in the imposing neoclassical two-story building of Foskardis in Galaro. Architectural grandeur was evident, with six Doric columns supporting the balcony of the second floor. On the attic, the Foskardis family coat of arms was preserved, along with a relief band with a Latin inscription "Auspicium Milioris aevi." The "Casino" was one of the centers of social life in Zakynthos until the earthquakes of 1893.
Inside the grand hall, with precious artistic decoration and pictorial ornamentation, the island's aristocrats, along with prominent foreign guests, dressed splendidly, danced the waltz, polkas, mazurkas, lancers, and unique cantrelles to the sounds of a special orchestra. All of this continued until the earthquakes of 1893, which brought down this splendid mansion. After a few years, the building and the estate of the aristocrat Foskardis passed into the ownership of Konstantinos Panti - Katsonia, who built a tall upper floor in place of the "Casino" with maritime windows, which from a distance looked like a tower. Unfortunately, this aristocratic mansion also collapsed during the earthquakes of 1953. Today, only the ruins of the mansion remain in this location, but the toponym "Casino" still lingers in the area to remind the people of Galaro of bygone eras. (Source: From the Cultural and Recreational Association of Planos, "Tsilivi")
The villa was named "Vrisi" because of its location, as in this area, there is abundant natural water from Mount Vrachionas. There are springs and wells within 100 meters of the house, where in the past, the village women used to wash their household clothes because there were no plumbing facilities.
